King George Island, Antarctica
King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands, is often considered the gateway to Antarctica. Located just 120 kilometers from the Antarctic Peninsula, it hosts the only airport in the region and serves as a hub for more than ten international research stations. Despite the small human presence, wildlife dominates the island. Adelie, Chinstrap, and Gentoo penguins are commonly seen, along with Weddell and leopard seals and a variety of seabirds. Covered mostly by snow and ice, the island was discovered in 1819 and remains a fascinating starting point for Antarctic exploration.
Antarctica Sound, Antarctica
Few journeys spark the imagination like a trip to Antarctica, one of the world’s most remote and breathtaking wildernesses. At the northern edge of the Antarctic Peninsula, the Antarctic Sound welcomes travelers with towering icebergs, dramatic glaciers, and incredible wildlife. Watch Gentoo penguins gather along the shores while seabirds glide overhead in this unforgettable polar landscape.
Antarctica Peninsula, Antarctica
The Antarctic Peninsula stretches toward South America and offers one of the most breathtaking introductions to the world’s southernmost continent. Here, dramatic glaciers, towering icebergs, and snow-covered mountains create an unforgettable landscape. Research stations study this pristine environment while thriving colonies of Adelie penguins and other wildlife live largely undisturbed.
South Shetland ISlands, Antarctica
The Antarctic Peninsula is the most accessible part of mainland Antarctica, just 480 miles from South America across the Drake Passage. Nearby, the South Shetland Islands are home to research stations, elephant seals, and large colonies of Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adélie penguins. Highlights include King George Island, the volcanic caldera of Deception Island, and historic Elephant Island, where Shackleton’s crew survived the winter of 1916.
Drake Passage
Crossing the legendary Drake Passage is part of the adventure of reaching Antarctica. As South America fades behind you, the journey south reveals towering icebergs, remarkable wildlife, and the first glimpses of the South Shetland Islands. Along the way, you may be accompanied by soaring albatrosses, whales, and dolphins drawn by the rich waters of this iconic passage.
Puerto Williams, Chile
Puerto Williams is a small Chilean town on Navarino Island along the Beagle Channel, often called the “southernmost city in the world.” Surrounded by windswept mountains and the dramatic Dientes de Navarino peaks, it offers stunning scenery and a quiet village atmosphere. Originally a naval base established in 1953, today it serves as an important gateway for Antarctic expeditions while maintaining a peaceful, remote charm at the edge of the world.
